“Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise making the most of your time, because the days are evil. So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.” - Ephesians 5:10-17
Do you ever stop and think about time? It seems as though everyone feels like there is never enough time. The days fly by and we are left feeling like we did not get enough done. Most people live their lives going through the motions, following the “to-do” list, just trying to keep up with the demands that our modern lives put on us.
It seems like we make plans, set goals, and have desires, but then wake up one day and realize years have passed and we never took the steps needed to reach them.
This is not the way our Heavenly Father wants us to live. This is the way the enemy wants us to live, completely distracted and running on fumes. Never reaching our potential.
The Word tells us, “make the most of your time.” What does this mean?
Well, I believe it means to live intentionally. We all have the same amount of hours in a day, and we have to choose how we are going to spend them.
The reality is, we make time for the things that are the most important to us. If you make time to go out to eat everyday or watch TV and scroll your phone every night, and never set aside time to intentionally spend with the Lord to grow your intimacy with Him then you will never grow in knowledge and Truth. If you never intentionally set aside time to spend with your spouse and children to seek the Lord together, then your family will not be able to walk as a complete unit with Christ at the center. Without intentionally stewarding the time that has been given to you, you will never reach the goals you desire; you will never grow. If you never grow then you will never make an impact in the lives of the people around you for the Kingdom.
The most important things in life require a sacrifice of time. Sometimes this looks like making time for something when you would rather be doing something else. Sometimes this looks like trusting the Lord when what you thought was going to happen quickly takes more time than you had hoped.
We must remember that we cannot get back time that has already passed. We only have what is to come, and we have to be intentional with how we spend this time.
If you desire to have a strong Biblical marriage that is built on Truth, with Christ in the center, then you must take the TIME each and every day to pour into that.
If you desire to be a Godly parent who raises up your children as true disciples of Jesus. Children who do not follow the way of the world, but stand firm and strong in faith, then you must take the TIME to teach them scriptures and how it applies to their lives. You must take the TIME to grow in Christ so you can model this for them.
If you want to be a Godly friend who builds others up, someone others want to come to because you carry the peace of the Lord and speak with wisdom and in Truth, then you must take the TIME to grow that intimacy with God.
No matter who you are or what season of life you’re in, we all have goals and desires. It could be spiritual, relational or physical. It is important to remember that our goals will never be reached without intentional time, hard work, and perseverance.
As Christ followers we have been blessed with a sound mind, self control, peace, patience, and faithfulness. All of these things are gifts from God that equip us to be intentional and thoughtful with our time. We are not victims of the clock, we are not at the mercy of a “to-do” list. We are children of the most High God and He is in control and if we allow Him, He will direct and order our steps each and every day.
If you feel like you have wasted your time on the wrong things each day, let me encourage you: His mercies are new every morning, and it is never too late to start shifting your focus off of the distractions and onto the Lord.
It’s about time we, as the body of Christ, stop letting life drag us along, and start being intentional with each day the Lord gives us.
