As I worshiped this morning, God told me, “stop busying yourself trying to come up with ideas to serve Me and just listen.” See, the problem when I try to come up with ideas on my own is a couple of things.
One, it’s all too easy for pride to slip in. Before you know it, I’ve started thinking, wow what a good idea this was, I’m so great!
Two, it is very challenging to serve the Lord out of a pure heart when it’s my own idea. My ideas tend to be things that will look impressive to other people, or at least that’s part of my motive behind them. They tend to be in my own comfort zone and be things I know I can do well.
The problem with that is when you’re confident in your own ability to do something well, you have no need of God. If you listen for His voice and follow where He leads, you may find yourself in uncomfortable situations where you feel totally unequipped. You may feel completely out of your element. But those are the situations where you have to look to God for strength, wisdom, the right words to say.
Then He gets all the glory for the good that comes out of the situation. There’s no longer any room for my pride to puff me up or my own self interest to corrupt my motives. At this point, I’m humbled and thankful to the Lord for the work He’s done through me, knowing I could never have done it without Him.
“But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” - 2 Corinthians 12:9-10
