Treasure

How do you change a habit? How do you just stop caring about something that you know is destructive in your life? Simple - make something else more important.

Notice I said simple, but not easy. The habits we develop and the things we spend our time on are centered around what's important to us. You will do what you prioritize. If you prioritize TV time over family time, you'll spend hours watching TV. If you want to change that habit, you have to make a conscious effort to prioritize family time.

Do you have those habits that you want to change but you just can’t seem to?
If you want to change something deeply imbedded in you, there's a couple of things that are important to know:

  1. It will take more than willpower, it will take Holy Spirit power.
  2. It has to be replaced my something else. In order for that habit to have lasting change, you have to make something else more important to you.

It's the same way with our relationship with God. Why is it so hard to get up early and read scripture? Because it's not a priority to you. That simple truth may seem harsh, but I have found freedom in the conviction it can bring, and I believe you can too.

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” - Matthew 6:21

If we treasure God's word, it will be easy to get up and read. You'll get to a point where you can't start your day without it! But how do you change what you treasure?

Now go back to number one for a second. Notice I said your willpower is not going to be enough. You're going to need Holy Spirit power. Thankfully, God knows this too and his scripture gives us clear direction on how to change what we treasure.

"Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart." - Psalm 37:4

When you don't know where to start, start with delighting in God's presence and He will literally change the desires of your heart to align with His. Once that happens, your priorities (or treasure) will shift and those bad habits will begin to change to holy habits.
