Power of the Tongue

As believers we have the authority and power to speak words of wisdom or words of negativity. The things that we think about are the very things that we will speak out.

How do you speak to your friends?
How do you speak to your spouse or family?
How do you speak to God in prayer?

If the Lord was sitting right next to you, would He be okay with how you’re using your words?

Are you speaking with love or doubt?
Are you speaking with joy or anger?

As God’s Word says in Proverbs 18:21, we are reminded through out scripture that the words we choose to speak can bring joy, encouragement, and love or it can bring hurt, division, and resentment.

"Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits." - Proverbs 18:21

If you think about anger, you will speak out words of bitterness.
If you think about depression, you will speak out words of darkness.

But when you take every thought captive and shift your mindset to what God says, the negativity will flee.

If you think on God’s goodness, you will speak out words of joy.
If you think on God’s grace, you will speak out words of love.

"Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear." -Ephesians 4:29

There is power in our words and our thoughts. If your words are not to glorify the kingdom of God, then begin to shift your focus and make sure that your thoughts are holy and righteous. The Lord urges us to avoid corrupting talk. Instead we should speak in ways that edify and encourage one another. Our words can build up or tear down. There is power in your speech and even in your actions.

James chapter 3 talks about “the controlling of the tongue.”

"With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God's likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be." - James 3:9-10

Our tongue and speech can either be a source of blessing or cursing. Our words should be glorifying God at all times, not giving in to the ways of the enemy. The thoughts that flow in your mind will be the very same words that flow out of your mouth. Are we keeping our thoughts and speech holy and righteous?

Meditate on God’s Word daily, He will guide you with all wisdom.

"The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks." -Luke 6:45

Before we speak and use our tongue, we need to make sure that our heart posture is right and holy before the Lord. Are our speech and our words producing good fruit or are they producing bad fruit?

Instead of speaking out anger, bitterness, or resentment, we need to speak out love, joy, and peace. We need to train our mouths to speak things out that are of God, rather than the things of this world. Using our tongue wisely is so important in our walk and relationship with God, but also to those around us.

If God speaks to us in love, shouldn’t we do the same for others?

When you do your daily activities or wherever you may be going for the day, ask God in prayer: “Lord, is what I speak out today going to glorify you?”

And remember- “There is power in the tongue”

Oh Holy Father, I pray my words have always been extremely loving, positive and only leaning towards you and your Holy Heart. I wouldn't ever do or say anything to hurt anyone I loved. Your presense is always around me when I am speaking so I pray that flows from my tongue. Amen Please let me know if I have done someone harm.
